The Farm. Area 482ha total in three blocks. Average rainfall 750 & 900mm. Altitude 210 & 300 m.a.s.l. Soils: stony silt and light alluvial soils at home, prone to drought. Heavier rolling silt soils at Glenroy.
Farming Policies. Coopworth x Texel/EF (“Textra”) breeding ewes, lambing 20 August. First drafts early November. Wean early December. Ewe hoggets mated to Primera lambing 10 Sept. Flexible cattle policies including dairy grazing, finishing 18-month steers and once-bred heifers. Pasture renewal through kale to lucerne, bromes and new AR1 ryegrasses.
Production levels: Lambing 2005 – 142% in ewes & 103% in hoggets.
Stock numbers at 30 June 2005: 2,266 ewes, 983 hoggets, 10 in-calf heifers & 66 finishing cattle. Say 3,400su / 350ha = 9.7su/ha. Numbers to be increased for winter 2006 with additional area.
