Location


Ngapeke Road, 15km south of Otorohanga.

Area


Total Farm is 495ha. Effective farmed area 440ha. Balance in pines (40ha), native bush (10ha) and leased out (4ha).

Average Rainfall

1570mm.

Altitude

100-220m ASL.

Soils

Predominantly Mairoa Ash.

 

Sheep Policy


Predominantly ˝ Finn / ˝ Romney. Lambing 20 August. Hoggets lambing 10 September. Target to finish 1200 works lambs January to June with balance (800) sold store in May.

 

Cattle Policy

Hereford breeding cows with R3yr heifers mated to a Charolais. R2yr Heifers mated to a Jersey. Calving dates 10 September for R3 and MA, 1 September for R2. All steers finished to 28 months including 150 purchased as yearlings in spring.

 

Pasture Renewal


There has been extensive pasture renewal programme in the last six years in an effort to improve the base productivity of the farm. A total of 169ha has been through renewal since 1997 including 120ha of summer fallow regrassing since 2001.

 

Production Levels


Lambing – 140% STS (Scan 180%). Target 60% Hoggets in lamb. Lamb sales averaged 16.5kg c/c for finished lambs (34% sold store). Average sale date of 15 April. Steers sold for an average of 350kg c/c with an average growth rate of 0.7kg LW/ day to average sale date of 1 February.

1812 MA Ewes, 615 Ewe Hoggets, 300 Wether Hoggets, 26 Rams, 82 MA Cows, 48 R2yr Heifers, 50 R1yr Heifers, 208 R2yr Steers, 49 R1yr Steers, 6 Bulls.
